Jewish life

Our staff, residents and volunteers make up a self-sufficient community, with kosher catering, a synagogue and a Religious Coordinator.

The Home celebrates all Jewish festivals and residents are encouraged to get involved in any way that suits them – from making and baking traditional foods to exploring cultural customs in discussion groups. Nightingale is a traditional Orthodox Jewish home but each resident’s decision about their own level of observance is respected.

Nightingale benefits from visits from Jewish speakers and its weekly Shabbat services are very popular.

Originally the Memorial Prayer (known as Yizkor) was said on Yom Kippur only.   In the course of time it became the practice to recite Yizkor on the last day of the festivals of Pesach, Shavuot and Shemini Atzeret.

The Yizkor booklet at Nightingale offers friends, relatives and residents the opportunity to follow the Yizkor prayer clearly as well as perpetuating the names of loved ones, so we so dearly remember.

We wish that their memory brings us comfort and strength as we travel along life’s road. He who makes death to vanish in life eternal; wipe away tears from all faces.
